Danby Moors Centre - Geography fieldwork

Today, Year 4 headed to Danby Moors Centre to complete their geography fieldwork.  The children recapped their knowledge around rivers on the walk down before getting in the river themselves to measure the width, depth and flow rate at different points on the River Esk.

We even managed to squeeze a bit of science in too, as the children used classification keys to identify living things they had found in the river.

The Coronation

Although the weather wasn't on our side, we still managed to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III with delicious cakes and juice in the classroom while we made our own decorations to take home for our own celebrations at home.

Here are our final products....

DT Day - Functional and Fancy Fabrics

During this unit we have explored the work of William Morris and how he has influenced home furnishings today. We began by looking at a range of household items and identifying their purpose and who they might appeal too (audience) and why as well as recognising how materials play an important role in the products made.

The children were then tasked with designing their own cushion cover, inspired by William Morris' work using simple patterns and colour choices. Today, they got to work and began bringing these designs to life. They created their own block prints using cardboard and string before beginning to create the cushion cover, demonstrating their sewing and printing skills. Here is a preview of the cushions created.

Watch out next week for the final product.....

Science Week

Science Week this year is focused around 'Communication' and we have certainly ensured that in Year 4. The children have thoroughly thrown themselves into science week and have loved taking part in the science workshop today where they learnt more about properties of materials and density through experimenting with different activities before sharing/teaching this new-learnt knowledge to parents.

World Book Day 2023

The children really put the effort in today for World Book Day as they came dressed as their favourite book character. We had everything from Harry Potter, Detectives, Matilda, Fantastic Mr Fox and Where's Wally to name just a few. In the morning, we took part in a poetry workshop where we worked closely with each other to create freeze-frames to portray different scenarios before writing our own poem.

Music backing track

In Music, the children are currently learning to play 'I feel good' by James Brown. Please find the backing track below for the children to practise along to at home. We look forward to hearing the final version.

Literacy

We have been enjoying our class text 'Beast Quest' this half term and over the last couple of weeks we have been planning and writing our own fantasy story.

PE

We have been enjoying our RealPE units this half term where we have been practising individual and partner balances as well as ball skills in our outdoor lessons.

Home learning

The children have been putting so much effort in at home with their home learning activities that they have loved sharing them in class. Thank you for all your support with them at home.

Science

In Science, we have been learning about state of matter so we turned ourselves into solid, liquid and gases to understand how each is matter is made up different and how the particles are structured.

Taotie masks

This week we had a visit from our local police officers.

Do you judge a book by it's cover?

Music Lessons

Electricity - we have been using our knowledge to predict if a circuit will work before testing it out for ourselves.

We made our own lanterns in order to write our step-by-step instructions
